The following linocut prints were completed one sunny afternoon at a printmaking workshop in the hills of San Cristóbal de las Casas in Mexico.
Unsurprisingly, the ancient Aztec ruins unique to this part of the world inspired the concept for the design. The composition, however, takes inspiration from a long admired artwork by surrealist artist Max Ernst ('The Entire City', 1934) discovered in the Kunsthaus Zürich many years ago. 2 of the 6 editions remain in Mexico and the rest came back to the UK where they have since been framed in colours reminiscent of my travels in Mexico.
